Physical Speleology and Palaeontology Department Institute of Speleology "Emil Racoviță"
Geology, stratigraphy and palaeontology of speleological deposits, karst cadastre and protection of Romania's karst environments
Geospeleology and Palaeontology
Study of the geology and stratigraphy of speleological deposits, cave mineralogy, speleogenesis and evolution of karst networks, modelling of speleothem formation processes, palaeontology of mammals from caves and karst sediments.
Cave mineralogy, speleogenesis and evolution of karst networks, modelling of speleothem formation processes, palaeontology of mammals from caves and karst sediments.
Absolute dating using the uranium series on carbonates, palaeoclimatic reconstructions based on speleothems, modelling of isotopic variations over time.
Working groups
The group comprises researchers specialised in absolute dating using the uranium series method, analysis of speleothem structure and mineralogy, palaeontology and stratigraphy of speleological deposits, and palaeoclimatic interpretations based on speleological deposits.
The palaeontological collection
The palaeontological collection includes specimens of mammals and small mammals collected from caves and karst areas in Romania, accumulating valuable material over decades of field research in Romanian karst systems.
Karstology, Cadastre and Karst Protection
The department's work establishes a direct link between interdisciplinary cave research and the overall understanding of karst environments, their protection and sustainable use. The team covers most speleological and karstological disciplines, with both established specialists and young researchers focused on the latest directions of study.
Theoretical and regional studies for understanding the structure and biodiversity of karst and associated terrains.
A digital tool for the identification and classification of karst elements, sites and resources.
Assessment of karst environment vulnerability and development of guidelines for the conservation and management of karst regions.
